About the Commonwealth's Attorney
The Commonwealth’s Attorney is Michael J. Newman who was first elected in 2009 and then reelected in 2013. He was most recently a Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. He first served in the office from 1998 to 2001 and then returned from private practice and served as a Danville City Attorney in 2005. He also served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in Pittsylvania County from 2001 to 2004. Michael graduated from Danville’s George Washington High School in 1989. He graduated from Mary Washington College in 1993 with a B.A. in political science. He received his J.D. from George Mason University in 1996. He is also a fourth generation Danvillian.
