ReportIt

Victims of theft or burglary often find themselves feeling overwhelmed from the sense of loss. Even more overwhelming is the fact that too often stolen items are not able to be traced or recovered. One way to help with this problem is to document your valuables and record serial numbers. Stolen property is usually converted to cash as quickly as it was stolen, and this is done with street sales, pawn shops, flea markets and social media sales apps.

The ReportIt service is a part of LeadsOnline, the online system that works with police across the country to track and recover stolen property. The Danville Police Department uses LeadsOnline to help track and recover stolen property ---- everything from jewelry to sporting equipment to electronics, computers, cameras, and other items such as designer clothing, collectibles, and other items with invaluable personal worth. The system allows detectives to search for the items using a variety of parameters, including item descriptions and serial numbers.  When an item is sold to a pawn or secondhand shop, the product information is entered in the LeadsOnline database and is immediately viewable by participating law enforcement agencies across the country.

A recorded serial number or owner applied number can very often lead police or insurance investigators back to the rightful owner, and can sometimes provide information on the sale or trade transaction and the person who made it. The few moments spent making the documentation could be invaluable in the event of a loss or theft
