Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

About the Program

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program provides financial assistance to eligible families to support children remaining in their own homes or that of a relative. Financial need and the age of the children are basic criteria for determining eligibility and payment amounts, which are time-limited.

An applicant must cooperate in naming the parents of all eligible children and must help establish paternity for each of them.

Several conditions must be met. Most able-bodied adult TANF recipients are required to participate in the Virginia Initiative for Employment Not Welfare (VIEW) program One component is mandatory work / training / education, unless the caretaker meets an exemption. This supports self sufficiency for participants.
