Functions

The Fire Training Division is tasked with ensuring all personnel within the department are trained to the highest level of service delivery possible. This is accomplished through formal training sessions held by the division and in-house training produced by the division and done by individual companies.

All training is conducted to the standards set forth by the National Fire Protection Association. The certifying agency is the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.

Firefighter Certification

If a new employee does not Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC), and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certifications upon employment, the department will ensure that he/she has the opportunity to gain them through the department within a probationary period.

The department encourages each firefighter to gain as much training as possible, not only from within the department but also outside the department through the Regional School Program offered by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.

Training Facility

The Danville and Pittsylvania County Regional Fire Training Center is located on Stinson Drive. This training center is jointly operated by the Danville Fire Department and the Pittsylvania County Fire Association. The training center offers the ability to provide firefighters live-fire, confined-space, and tactical rescue training. Also, the center offers pump testing and pump operator training.

This modern facility replaced the Third Avenue Training Center which is located behind Fire Station Number 5 on Third Avenue.
