Fred O. Shanks III, a professional engineer, was elected to City Council in May 2008. The Danville native and local small business owner, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. Following graduation, he was employed as a civil engineer with firms in Richmond and Roanoke. In 1987, he founded Shanks Associates, P.C. and opened a Danville office in 1991. In 1998, the firm acquired two land surveying firms in Martinsville, Virginia. After returning to Danville, Mr. Shanks served on the City Planning Commission for 12 years.
He has also served on numerous local and state boards and in 1991 served
as President of the Virginia Association of Surveyors. He currently
serves as Legislative Liaison for the Virginia Association of Surveyors,
is a member of the Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility
Authority and serves on the policy board of the Virginia Department of
Transportation Metropolitan Planning Organization.
