Summer is in full swing and Danville Parks and Recreation wants to make sure your child stays active. From kayaks to dodge ball, Parks and Recreation camps have it all.
One of the best ways to take advantage of the Dan River and the surrounding region is to enroll in Outdoor Adventure Camp and spend the week rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, riding the zip line, hiking, learning survival skills and more.
Outdoor Adventure Camp meets on a weekly basis from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. beginning the week of June 17. The final week runs August 5 – August 9. The camp costs $125 per week ($150 for non-city residents). Weekly camp dates include June 17 – 21, June 24-28, July 22-26, and August 5-9. For youth ages 10-14.
For a more specialized camp, Outdoor Recreation also offers Kayak Camp, a three-day adventure culminating in an all-day trip. During the camp, participants will learn the basic skills of operating a kayak on flat and moving water. Kayak Camp runs July 1 – 3 or July 29-31. The cost is $90 ($112 for non-city residents). For youth ages 12-15.
If those camps are too calm, check out the Coastal Adventures Overnight Camp. Participants will spend three days paddling wild marshes, observing coastal wildlife and exploring marine environments while camping overnight on Bear Island in North Carolina. The trip costs $160 ($185 for non-city residents). For youth ages 12-15.
Parks and Recreation also offers an array of child-care style camps throughout the summer. Camp locations include Coates Recreation Center on Westover Drive and Stonewall Recreation Center on North Main Street. Both camps are for children ages 5-12 and include a full lineup of activities including arts and crafts, games, physical activities, field trips and more.
Coates Recreation camp runs from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and costs $80 per week ($95 for non-city residents). Stonewall’s camp runs from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and costs $60 per week ($72 for non-city residents). Both camps end August 9.
For the sports enthusiast, Sports and Athletics offers camps including Soccer Camp from June 17-21, Football Camp from July 15-19 and Playground Sports from July 8-12. All sports camps cost $50 per week ($62.50 for non-city residents).
Parks and Recreation has also teamed up with Danville 4H to offer a six-week specialty camp at Glenwood Recreation Center on Halifax Road. Participants will enjoy activities focused on science, technology, food, nutrition, character building and more. The camp runs from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. July 1 – August 9 and costs $80 per week ($95 for city-residents).
