Top things to do in Danville this weekend

Martinsville Speedway on race day

The weekend offers several events from which to choose, ranging from Halloween-themed events to the final Farmers’ Market of the season. Or take a short drive to Martinsville for NASCAR action.


RACE WEEKEND AT MARTINSVILLE

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: Martinsville Speedway, 340 Speedway Road, Ridgeway, VA

This year, the historic track celebrates its 70th anniversary. The events start on Friday with practice day and continues on Saturday with the Texas Roadhouse 200 presented by Alpha Energy Solutions. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be in action on Sunday, with the running of the First Data 500. The race is the first in the Round of 8 playoffs. FINAL FARMERS’ MARKET

When: 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday

Where: Danville Community Market, 629 Craghead St.

The Danville Farmers’ Market will close for the season on Saturday, Oct. 28, with vendors selling local produce, meat, eggs, plants, flowers, baked goods and homemade gifts.

The Farmers’ Market will reopen for the annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 18, and the annual Holiday Market on Saturday, Dec. 2.


HALLOWEEN AT THE MUSEUM

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday

Where: Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, 975 Main St.

Take part in a fun-filled art class. Educator Linda Gourley will instruct students in the art of mask making and creating pumpkin faces. HAUNTED HISTORY WALKING TOUR

When: 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday

Where: Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, 975 Main St.

Get in the Halloween "spirit" by discovering more about the Old West End Historic District and its unusual occurrences. Your tour guide will tell about the history of the district as well as many goings-on that can't be easily explained. This tour is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Friends of the Old West End. BALLAD HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY

When: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday

Where: Ballad Brewing, 600 Craghead St.

Ballad Brewing is hosting its first Halloween party. Come dressed in your Halloween best for an opportunity to win a special prize. Jason Springs will be playing in the taproom from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nana Karen's will be serving food in the food truck area. For more information, visit Ballad Brewing’s Facebook page.


HALLOWEEN MAGIC SPOOKTACULAR

When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: The Historic North Theatre, 629 North Main St.

Celebrity magician Wayne Alan presents this family friendly show that features cool Halloween magic tricks, fun comedy, and audience participation. Even the youngest members of the family can enjoy this show, as there is nothing too scary or inappropriate for young children in the performance. In addition, award-winning singer, performer and director Gary J. Sullivan will sing the classic Broadway hit “Music of the Night” from the Phantom of the Opera. FALL JURIED ART EXHIBITION

When: 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday

Where: Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, 975 Main St.

The Danville Art League is holding its annual fall juried exhibition, “Nature’s Pallet.” “Nature’s Pallet” is a play on words attempting to capitalize on the colors and the beauty of nature.
