Top things to do in Danville this weekend

What a weekend ahead! Cheer on the GW Eagles in football playoff action Friday night as they look to avenge their only loss of the season against Amherst County and advance to the region semifinals.

Friday night also marks the opening night of two theater productions, with the North Star Project’s “Xanadu Jr.” and The Little Theatre of Danville’s “The Glass Menagerie.” Both productions take the stage again on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The Virginia International Raceway will host the 3-Gun Nation Championship and Shooting Expo starting Friday night and continuing Saturday night and Sunday night.

On Saturday, start your day by participating in God’s Storehouse’s annual Breakfast with Santa. Also on Saturday, the AAF Tank Museum will stage indoor, radio control tank battles. End your Saturday with the annual Bright Leaf Brew Fest.

George Washington High hosts Amherst County in the first round of the state playoffs. GW (9-1) is seeded No. 2 after closing out the regular season with a clean sweep of the Piedmont District. Amherst (6-4) is seeded No. 7, but handed GW its only loss by a score of 55-45 in early September. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Where: Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History, 975 Main St.

The Little Theatre of Danville will present Tennessee Williams’ classic play “The Glass Menagerie.” Michelle Cahill directs the play. The cast is Madalyn Mohamed as Amanda Wingfield, Douglas Adams as Tom Wingfield, Kris Dodds Williams as Laura Wingfield and David Hammack as Jim O’Connor. Tickets are $15 and are available at the museum and at Karen’s Hallmark in Danville Mall. Tickets can be purchased at the door for each performance.


When: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday

Where: The Historic North Theatre, 629 North Main St.

Thirty-five talented kids ages 8-18 are taking to the stage during the North Star Theatre Project’s production of “Xanadu Jr.” Mimi Grubb directs the play, which will be performed over two weekends, Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 17-19. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and can be reserved in advance by calling (434) 793-7469 or can be purchased at the door.

The three days of action includes the Nationals Championship, Pro Series Championship, live fire demonstrations, product testing and more. Friday night, the top 16 competitors from the Pro Series will go head-to-head to make the final eight. Saturday night, the final eight will compete to determine who will be the Pro Series Champion. Throughout the weekend, competitors will test their skills on VIR’s NRA-approved traditional ranges, shoot-house and natural terrain areas for courses of fire. Fans can purchase tickets for the 3-Gun Nation Championship and Shooting Sports Expo weekend at the VIR gate for just $10 daily. Children 16 and under are admitted free of charge with a paying adult and parking is also free. God’s Storehouse presents the annual Breakfast with Santa. There will be seatings at 8:15 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. All are welcome. Bring your camera for pictures and your letters to make sure they are hand delivered to Santa! Tickets are $10 and will be sold at Karen's Hallmark in Danville Mall, Woodforest National Bank inside Walmart, and God's Storehouse. The 10th Annual Bright Leaf Brew Fest offers a day of fun with a thousand of your closest friends. Sample from more than 100 different beers, enjoy live music and eat some delicious food. Two stages of entertainment will be available throughout the event. A sellout is expected. This is a 21-and-over event. You must show your ID for entrance to the event. Every ticket you purchase will support the Veteran's Memorial at Dan Daniel Park and Rides for Vets. Tickets are $30 in advance and, if available, $35 day of event.
