On 04-09-18 at approximately 7:40pm officers responded to Southern Street in reference to a report of a domestic assault. Once officers arrived on the scene they spoke with the 27 year old female victim who was outside of the residence. The victim told responding officers she had been struck in the head and threatened with a handgun by her 28 year old boyfriend Corey Evan Smith. Officers observed the victim showed signs of an assault.
Smith, who was inside the residence at the doorway along with 3 small children, began speaking with officers. During the conversation Smith closed the door jerking the children inside. Officers could hear Smith barricading the doorway.
Responding officers attempted communication with Smith who became agitated and verbally aggressive toward the officers.
Negotiators were called to the scene and began communicating with Smith. Negotiators spoke with Smith for about an hour asking him to surrender and to let the children come outside. Smith continued to be agitated and banging on the walls of the residence.
Smith then in an effort to yell at the negotiators, extended his upper body out of a window. A Taser was successfully deployed on Smith and he was taken into custody. The children were unharmed during the incident. After a search of the residence officers were unable to locate a handgun.
Corey Evan Smith was charged with the following:
Domestic Assault in violation of Virginia State Code 18.2-57.2
Felony Child Endangerment in violation of Virginia State Code 18.2-371.1
A protective order was also served on Smith.
