City to offer free bus service on Election Day

City Council voted Tuesday night to allow Danville Transit to offer free bus service on Election Day for all fixed-route and reservation-based trips. Election Day is Nov. 5.

The free bus service is designed to encourage citizens to vote by removing the barrier of transportation access.

Danville Transit offers fixed-route service to the majority of polling locations. Also, it offers reservation-based transportation service and door-to-door service for persons with disabilities throughout the city limits.

In other matters, City Council voted to:

  • Adopt a resolution to accept the transfer of two parcels on Airport Drive from the Industrial Development Authority. The transfer would allow the right-of-way access to replace the existing curve at the end of Airport Drive adjacent to the airport tower. It also would allow for a trail extension that ends across the street from the airport tower.
  • Adopt a resolution to approve enterprise zone amendments sought by Pittsylvania County.
  • Approve an ordinance appropriating state aviation grant funds and local matching funds for security lock replacement at the Danville Regional Airport.
  • These votes were taken during City Council’s business session.

Following the close of the business session, City Council met in a work session. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

During tonight’s work session, City Council reviewed the latest financial reports and scheduled for its next business session a public hearing for improvements to Westmoreland Park.

Also, the City Council held a closed meeting as allowed by state law for consultation with legal counsel.
