City Council’s inaugural meeting set for July 1

City Council will hold its inaugural meeting at noon on Wednesday, July 1. The organizational meeting is held every two years for the public swearing-in of winners of the most recent City Council election, selection of a mayor and vice mayor, and issuance of seat assignments for each Council meeting.

The meeting will take place in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building.

L.G. (Larry) Campbell, Sherman Saunders, Lee Vogler and Madison Whittle won re-election in May. They will be joined in taking the oath of office by Barry Mayo, who won election for his first term on Council.

The City Council selects the mayor and vice mayor from among its members to serve a two-year term. Currently, Alonzo Jones is mayor, a position he has held since July 1, 2018. Vogler is the vice mayor, and he has served in that position for the past two years.

Following the selection of mayor and vice mayor, seating positions for every council member except the mayor will be determined by a random drawing. Council members must maintain the positions assigned for each meeting until the next inaugural meeting in two years.

Council members serve four-year, staggered terms. The other members of the Council are James Buckner, Jones, Gary Miller and Adam Tomer. However, Tomer has announced that he is resigning his seat effective June 30, saying in a statement that he has accepted a job elsewhere that will not allow him “the time or ability to serve the citizens of Danville.”

Tomer was initially elected to City Council in 2006, and his current term was slated to end June 30, 2022. City Council will meet in a special session at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, to discuss the process for filling Tomer’s seat.
