As a result of the investigation into the vehicle crash this afternoon on the Route 29 Expressway, the driver of the Nissan, John Joseph Beckelheimer, age 46 of Pittsylvania County was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Due to ongoing medical treatment he was issued a summons before he was airlifted to Roanoke and will be arraigned at a later date.

The driver of the Ford was released from Danville Regional Medical Center.
