[ARCHIVED] Fourth Celebration features pie contest, concerts and fireworks

The city’s July Fourth Celebration will feature the Patriot’s Challenge, the first Wednesday Farmer’s Market of the summer, a pie contest, concerts, a children’s area with amusement rides and arts and crafts, and fireworks.

For early risers, the Patriot’s Challenge 5K/10K race and Kids’ Fun Run will take place at 8 a.m. at Anglers Park.

Activities then switch to Community Market and Carrington Pavilion at the Crossing at the Dan on Craghead Street, beginning with the Farmer’s Market, which will open at 3 p.m. In addition, area pie bakers will begin submitting at 3 p.m. their entries for the Pie Contest. All entries must be registered and submitted by 4 p.m.

The gates to the Carrington Pavilion will open at 4 p.m. for the Red, White and Bluegrass Show, a new music theme for the Fourth Celebration. The show will feature three bands in concert, beginning with the Leipers Fork Bluegrass Band from Columbia, Tenn., in concert at 4:15 p.m. The band will be followed by the Johnathan Dillon Bluegrass Band from Rocky Mount at 5:15 p.m. and Danville’s own Church Sisters at 6:30 p.m. The Leipers Fork band will take the stage one last time at 8:15 p.m.

There will be a children’s area with free amusement rides, arts and crafts. Vendors will sell food and drinks.

The celebration ends with the annual fireworks display.
