CLASSIFICATION

The Danville Sheriff's office implemented Classification in the jail in July 2006. Classification is the process by which inmates are housed within the jail based on contributing factors such as criminal charges and history, institutional adjustments and behaviors, age, mental and physical health assessments, community ties, and the potential for victimization.
Classification is used to achieve department goals and reinforce our mission statement. Classification provides a means for public safety, inmate safety, fairness, and consistency throughout the facility. Since implementation, the Danville City Jail has experienced a significant decrease in inmate altercations and disciplinary write-ups. The overall jail environment has improved and created a safer environment for officers and inmates.
Classification is an ongoing process and is managed by Lieutenant Steve Martin. Lt. Martin is dedicated to the safety of the Danville city Jail's inmates and staff. Lt. Martin personally interviews each inmate and determines their housing assignment.
