[ARCHIVED] City Council reviews ordinance establishing ‘Danville United’ coalition

Danville City Council reviewed an ordinance Tuesday night that would establish the “Danville United Community Relations Coalition,” which would be generally known as “Danville United.”

The ordinance, which Council could vote to adopt at its next meeting on Oct. 17, would establish the coalition to engage the community in making Danville a more tolerant, friendly and welcoming community to all citizens regardless of race, sex, religion, creed, nationality or economic status.

The coalition would provide opportunities for networking, sharing information, developing strategies, engaging and informing the public, and undertaking coordinated activities. The coalition would not oversee municipal departments, and it would not direct activities of member organizations or individuals.

Membership would open to individuals and organizations who submit an application to the city manager’s office. Unlike its other boards and commissions, City Council will not appoint members.

Members of the coalition will elect their leadership. The city of Danville will provide staff support.

The ordinance also provides initial bylaws for the frequency of meetings, establishment of a quorum and voting.

City Council began discussing the formation of a community relations coalition at the request of local minister Bishop Lawrence Campbell on June 18.
