[ARCHIVED] City Council approves resolution on ‘Beaches to Bluegrass Trail’

Danville City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a resolution in support of the statewide “Beaches to Bluegrass Trail.” The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation wants to use the city’s Riverwalk Trail as a central component of the statewide trail.

The proposed statewide, shared-use trail would connect the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean through southern and southwestern Virginia. The state agency has asked that each locality along the path of the trans-Virginia trail approve a resolution in support of the project.

A Danville Parks and Recreation survey earlier this year showed strong support for continued development of the Riverwalk Trail, with 75.6 percent of those participating in the survey rating the trail as the most important function of the department. City staff believes the inclusion of the Riverwalk Trail in the central portion of the Beaches to Bluegrass Trail can serve to sustain the positive image of Danville among residents and visitors and to attract trail-related businesses to the community.

City Council also voted to create a third rental housing inspection district within a portion of the Old West End Historic District.
