[ARCHIVED] The following is a news release regarding a gas explosion earlier this morning at an apartment build

An apartment building at 677 Arnett Blvd. was damaged early Saturday morning in a natural gas explosion that was caused when a vehicle struck the building and severed gas lines at the meters, creating a leak that filled the building with a high concentration of gas.
While firefighters searched and removed victims a explosion occurred compromising the 18-unit building; buckling walls and floors. The explosion also caused a structure fire that did significant damage to the building.
Six residents were transported to Danville Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Another 14 residents were displaced. The Red Cross assisted displaced residents in finding accommodations.
The Danville Fire Department responded with four engines, one ladder, two command officers and a safety officer. The Danville Police Department assisted with the evacuation of residents around the scene, as well as Danville Life Saving Crew, who treated and transported the injured.
Units were dispatched to the Royal Terrace Apartments at 1:16 a.m. after a vehicle traveling on Arnett Boulevard veered off the roadway and struck the apartment building.
Firefighters were evacuating residents when a major explosion occurred. Firefighters continued to search for victims after the explosion but were not able to enter four of the apartment units due to a high concentration of gas that developed when the gas lines were severed.
City utilities workers shut off gas and power service to the building. Once the explosive atmosphere was controlled firefighters were able to search the four units. The units were not occupied at the time of the search.
The fire marshal’s office and police continue to investigate the incident.
