The Rev. Ron Johnson agreed Thursday night to continue to serve as chairman of the Danville United Community Relations Coalition. The Rev. John Carroll also agreed to continue as vice chairman.
Johnson is pastor at Holbrook Presbyterian Church in Danville. Carroll is pastor at First Baptist Church in Danville. Both will serve until Dec. 31.
Danville United’s status beyond Dec. 31 is yet to be determined. City Council adopted an ordinance in October 2013 that created the coalition. Council could vote to renew or reform the ordinance or allow it to expire. If it expires, the coalition could re-establish itself as a community organization.
The next meeting of Danville United is scheduled for Oct. 22. The time and location will be announced at a later date. At that meeting, the members will discuss the future of the organization.
An election of chairman and vice chairman was scheduled Thursday night, but it could be held due to lack of a quorum. The chairman presides over meetings, with the vice chairman presiding in the absence of the chairman.
Johnson and Carroll have served in their respective positions since Jan. 30, 2014. They were the first elected chairman and vice chairman to lead the coalition. They succeeded Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders and Vice Mayor Gary Miller, who were appointed by Danville City Council to serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively, during the initial organization of the coalition.
Membership is open to all individuals and organizations. For more information on Danville United, visit www.danvilleunited.org.
