West Main Street between Montague Street and Canterbury Road will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, to allow a contract crew to remove two willow oak trees at the northwest corner of Lady Astor Street and West Main Street.
Danville Public Works will establish detours for through traffic at Central Boulevard and Park Avenue. Local traffic will be detoured at Canterbury Road and Montague Street.
The contract crew will begin its removal operation at 7 a.m. Saturday, but the detours will be in place an hour or more before then. The detours could remain in place overnight, depending on the tree removal progress.
Rick Drazenovich, director of public works, said the trees must be removed because their root systems lack sufficient room to support them. The contractor is Asplundh Tree Expert Co.
Motorists are urged to slow down when approaching this area and be alert to altered traffic patterns or consider an alternate route.
