Danville Utilities and STS Hydro will be lowering the water level behind the Schoolfield Dam on Tuesday, Aug. 30, to allow for inspection of the dam structure below the normal water level.
A visual inspection is conducted periodically to make sure there are no repairs needed to the concrete, metal or wooden structures. In addition, the sediment deposits along the banks of the Dan River and the dam will be evaluated.
Lowering of the water level will begin at about 5 a.m. that day. The inspection is expected to be completed by noon, and then the gates to the dam will be closed to allow the reservoir to fill.
It is anticipated that the total time required for this work will be 8 to 12 hours, including the time to allow for refilling of the reservoir.
During this time, the boat ramp at Abreu Grogan Park will not be usable and no boats will be able to be launched there.
Danville Utilities provides natural gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications services in Danville and distributes electricity to approximately 42,000 customer locations in a 500-square-mile service territory covering Danville, the southern third of Pittsylvania County, and small portions of Henry and Halifax counties.
