City Council will meet Tuesday, Nov. 15, in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.
The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.
The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.
During the business session, City Council is hold a first reading on whether to accept state money to purchase two propane buses. The buses will be used by Danville Transit to provide shuttle service along Mount Cross Road to Averett University’s north campus.
A first reading is an introductory step required by City code before certain matters can be voted upon by City Council. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. Council cannot vote on these matters Tuesday. The earliest vote that can take place will be the Dec. 6 City Council meeting.
Last month, the state approved a contract to fully finance the purchase of the buses and construction of a bus shelter for the new service. Averett University will provide contract revenue to offset operating costs for the new service. The bus service would start in August.
A public hearing will precede City Council action on this matter.
For the work session, the agenda includes the following items:
• review of monthly financial statements
• abandonment of right-of-way off Eastwood Drive
• declaration of 205 Jefferson Ave. as a blighted property and adoption of an abatement plan for the property
• amendment to the City Code to provide for civil penalties for certain violations of the state building code
• resolution to grant an easement upon city property in Pittsylvania County
• appointments to the Employee Retirement System, Fair Housing Board, Planning Commission and Dan River Alcohol Safety Action Program.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page and the city's YouTube channel — DanvilleVaGov.
River City TV does not air work sessions, but they are open to the public.
