Danville native and former professional basketball player John Bailey will bring his positive message to student athletes this Friday at Squire Recreation Center and the City Auditorium Gymnasium.

“We are excited to host Mr. Bailey at our programs this week,” said Danville Parks and Recreation Department Director Bill Sgrinia. “We hope our participants will take advantage of the opportunity and will gain a little wisdom from Mr. Bailey’s experiences.”

Bailey will first speak during the Teen Basketball Tournament at 6 p.m. at the City Auditorium and then again at Squire Recreation Center at 7 p.m. during Optimist Basketball League games.

The message, according to Bailey, is a simple but meaningful lesson in “using your H.E.A.D.” and applying the lessons basketball offers to life.

The teen tournament is a 3-on-3 format. Registration begins at 5 p.m. There is no fee to participate and registration is not required. While league play is not open to the public to participate, the games are open as is Bailey’s presentation.

Bailey was an American Basketball Association player in the 1970s and played for both the Indiana Pacers and the Virginia Squires. After his basketball career, he served as the Executive Director of the Princeton Youth Center in New Jersey before moving to Denver, Colorado, where he currently resides with his wife, Dr. Sharon Bailey. He is the owner of Bailey Consulting Network, a community consulting business emphasizing organizational outreach development for corporate, political and community programs. Bailey is also the founder of Joint Effort Youth Foundation, a youth development sports and education program for youth.
