The Danville Fire Department responded to a reported fire alarm at 601 Bridge Street – Apartment 306 this afternoon at 2:05pm. Crews arrived at 2:06pm and found nothing showing from a 5 story apartment building. Upon entering the building they encountered light smoke conditions on the third floor in the hallway. Approaching the apartment, they encountered water coming from under the apartment door and heavier smoke conditions. They initiated a full alarm assignment to the apartment building. Engine 1’s crew entered apartment 306 and found moderate smoke conditions and a small fire beside the stove. They quickly extinguished the small fire with a fire extinguisher as the sprinkler system had extinguished most all of the fire. The fire was determined to be under control at 2:25pm.
A fan was set up and used to ventilate the third floor. The fire crews assisted the residents with evacuating the first, second and third floors. The fire department assisted one resident out of the structure with difficulty breathing. The patient was treated and transported by the Danville Life Saving Crew to the Danville Regional Medical Center.
The sprinkler system was controlled and salvage operations were done. The fire apartment sustained minor fire, smoke and water damage. Seven other apartments sustained water damage. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants.
The Danville Fire Department responded with 3 engines, a ladder truck, 2 command units, one support unit and one fire marshal. Seventeen fire personnel were on the scene for two hours and 29 minutes. The Danville Life Saving Crew, Danville Electric Department, Danville Water and Gas Department and the American Red Cross assisted on scene.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office and determined to be unattended cooking. No other injuries were reported.
