Bridge repairs began today on Central Boulevard at Piedmont Drive and River Street and South Boston Road at Fall Creek. The work will continue over the next three to four months and will require alternating lane closures.
The lane closures will be in effect 24/7. Motorists are urged to slow down and be alert to altered traffic patterns or consider an alternate route.
Burleigh Construction Co. of Concord is the contractor for both projects.
On River Street and South Boston Road, the contractor has closed one eastbound lane and one westbound lane from Bryant Avenue to Old Halifax Road to allow for repairs to the bridge deck over Fall Creek. Later on, the work crew will reopen the two lanes, but close the second eastbound and westbound lanes.
The work on Central Boulevard will proceed in the same manner. The contractor has closed the right northbound lane from Riverside Drive to Piedmont Drive and the right southbound lane from Holt Garrison Parkway to Piedmont Drive. Later on, the lanes will be reopened, but the remaining two lanes of the four-lane roadway will be closed. The lane closures allow for repairs to the bridge deck over Piedmont Drive.
The bridge repairs include replacing expansion joints and patching and overlaying the deck. In addition, the Falls Creek bridge is scheduled to have the railings sandblasted and painted.
The city maintains 41 bridges. Each bridge is inspected every two years either by a staff engineer or by a private contractor.
