[ARCHIVED] City posts agendas for next City Council meeting

City Council will meet Tuesday, July 18, in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.

The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

During the business session, City Council is scheduled to receive an update from the Danville Area Humane Society. Council also will formally reschedule its first meeting in August in order to attend National Night Out events set for Tuesday, Aug. 1. City Council meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, but will move its first meeting in August to Thursday, Aug. 3, to avoid the schedule conflict.

These two items are the only matters on the agenda for the business session.

During the work session, City Council will receive a presentation from City staff on possible implementation of a zero-based budgeting process. When using this budgeting process, a local government builds an annual budget from the ground up, starting from scratch. This means that every expenditure begins at zero and undergoes scrutiny every year to determine whether the purpose and amount of the expense is appropriate.

In addition to the presentation on zero-based budgeting, City Council will discuss the following matters:

  • appointments to several boards and commissions
  • an update on the mayor’s committee on a fixed base operator for the airport.
  • a request from Del. Danny Marshall to support an effort to create state legislation that would provide a “tax free zone” incentive to businesses choosing to locate in vacant school buildings.
  • a request from Present Help Ministries that the City vacate an unimproved public alley on Lee Street.
  • use of state money to resurface various segments of Riverside Drive and Central Boulevard.
  • use of additional state money to complete the widening of westbound South Boston Road that is currently underway.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

River City TV does not air work sessions, but they are open to the public.
