The Danville Fire Department responded to a working fire at
231 South Ridge Street at 07:17:27 this morning. The occupancy at this location
is Heritage Towers Apartments. Fire units from Lynn Street Station, Industrial
Avenue Station, and the Airport Station responded. The first units on scene
found an issue with the elevator motor and power was turned off to those
elevators. There was moderate smoke reported on the second, third, and fourth
floors; as a result the residents on these floors were evacuated. The oncoming
shift also reported to the scene and assisted with operations. The occupants on
the fourth floor were evacuated outside to awaiting buses. The remaining
occupants were relocated inside the building to a safe location on the first
floor. Maintenance personnel determined a fluid leak at the elevator motor had
shorted a pump causing the smoke. Three occupants were treated and released by
the Danville Life Saving Crew. The Danville Police Department was present and
blocked the street. Once the situation was controlled and all floors were
cleared of smoke, the occupants were allowed to return to their apartments. The
Danville Fire Department had three engines, one ladder truck and three support
vehicles on scene. A total of 31 personnel assisted at the scene. The Danville
Life Saving Crew had two transports on scene and a total of five personnel. The
Danville Police Department provided two officers. Danville Transportation
Division provided two buses. The total time spent on scene was two hours and nine
minutes.
