[ARCHIVED] Patton Street project moving to next phase

Traffic alert sign

The Patton Street storm water drainage project is scheduled to move to its fourth phase on Monday, March 5. South Union Street will be closed to vehicular traffic. Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians.

In this phase, construction will take place at the intersection of Patton and South Union streets. Patton Street will remain closed to all through traffic, with northbound traffic being detoured onto Court Street and southbound traffic being detoured onto South Market Street.

Water service along South Union Street may be temporarily disrupted to some businesses in the coming weeks. The City of Danville will minimize this disruption.

The work in this phase is expected to take five to six weeks to complete, weather permitting. However, construction in the fifth and final phase will take place on South Union Street, so the street will remain closed for the duration of the project, which is projected to end in May. Patton Street likely will be reopened in the final phase.

The project began Oct. 4 at the lower end of Patton Street in the block from Lynn to Craghead streets. The project is being conducted in five phases. Once completed, storm water drainage will be rerouted from a partially blocked culvert located between South Union and South Market streets into the new storm drain.

Portions of the existing storm water drainage system through downtown are hand-built stone culverts. A portion of this structure is located under buildings and is unable to be properly maintained.

Haymes Brothers Inc. of Chatham is the contractor for the project.
