[ARCHIVED] Public meeting scheduled on power line upgrade

Danville Utilities logo

Danville Utilities will hold a public information meeting on Wednesday, May 2, to present plans to upgrade the overhead transmission line connecting the Riverside and New Design substations.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Pepsi Building, which is located at 661 Craghead St.

The upgrade will provide greater capacity and better reliability by allowing larger electric loads to be shifted as needed between the two substations.

The new 69,000 volt (69kV) line will begin on Piney Forest Road at Woodside Drive and then follow the existing wood pole line for 1.1 miles to Beavers Mill Road. Steel poles will replace the existing wood poles.

The project is scheduled to begin in mid-to-late May and will take an estimated six months to complete. Alternating lane closures will be necessary at times during construction.

Davis H. Elliot Co. of Roanoke is the contractor.

Danville Utilities provides natural gas, water, wastewater and telecommunications services in Danville and distributes electricity to approximately 42,000 customer locations in a 500-square-mile service territory covering Danville, the southern third of Pittsylvania County, and small portions of Henry and Halifax counties.
