Danville Police and Fire departments are partnering to provide child safety seat checks and installation from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 2, at the Community Market, which is located at 629 Craghead St. Anyone who provides transportation to children is encouraged to stop by for a free inspection of the installation of their child seats.
Certified child seat technicians also will show how to fit your child properly in the seat. No appointment is necessary.
The Virginia child passenger law requires all children under age 8 to be properly restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat. Rear-facing child safety seats must be secured in the back seat of a vehicle. Children cannot ride unrestrained in the rear cargo area of a vehicle.
The law applies to anyone (parents, grandparents, babysitters, friends) who provides transportation for a child in any vehicle manufactured after Jan. 1, 1968.
In addition, a child restraint system or a safety belt must properly restrain all children between 8 and 18. For additional information or for assistance with child seat installation, call the Police Department's crime prevention office at 434-797-8898.
