Reconstruction of two eastbound lanes of Riverside Drive from the bridge over Sandy Creek to Audubon Drive will begin this week following the July Fourth holiday.
The project is expected to take 90 days to complete, weather permitting. During this time, eastbound traffic on Riverside Drive will be restricted to the far right lane and subject to a speed limit of 25 mph beginning after the intersection at Mount Cross Road.
The reconstruction consists of the removal of the existing asphalt pavement and concrete base, and then replacing it with a new stone base and asphalt layers. The new base and surface will eliminate the current uneven riding surface and reduce maintenance costs.
The intersection of Piney Forest Road and Riverside Drive and the intersection of Audubon Drive and Riverside Drive will remain open during project.
The crossover at Neal Court initially will be closed, but then reopened. The other crossovers will be closed.
Virginia Carolina Paving of South Boston is the contractor. The company was awarded the contract with a bid of $1.1 million.
Traffic control signs will be in place to redirect traffic. Motorists are urged to slow down when approaching this area and be alert to altered traffic patterns or consider an alternate route.
