[ARCHIVED] Art trail will showcase nine new sculptures

The votes have been tallied and the winners of this year’s People’s Choice Vote for the next round of the Danville Art Trail are “Koi Bench” by Jim Gallucci and “Triad” by Scott Strader.

“We were extremely pleased with voting this year,” said Danville Parks and Recreation Director Bill Sgrinia. “In the few days of online voting, we had 413 submissions and the two entrants won pretty handedly.”

The two pieces, along with seven other pieces selected by a panel, will be installed in and around the River District by Aug. 17.

“This is our third edition of the art trail, and each one brings new and interesting pieces to the community,” Sgrinia said. “Public art displays provide social, cultural, and economic value to cities by providing opportunities for social interaction while also creating a more dynamic cultural scene that makes an area more attractive to individuals and businesses.

“Our goal with this project, since the beginning, is to provide access to art for the community and to develop a unique identity to the downtown area. We believe each installment of the trail accomplishes that goal.”

The Danville Art Trail opened in 2015 and consisted of seven sculptures on display for 18 months. The second round included two of the original pieces and seven new pieces currently on display at the Crossing at the Dan, the Charles Harris Financial Building, Danville Public Library, former site of the Downtowner, Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, Main Street Plaza and at the Danville Science Center.

This year’s selected pieces include “A Question of Balance” by Charles Pilkey, “Corps de Ballet” by Michael Bednar, “Furious Angel” and “Triad” by Scott Strader, “Koi Bench” by Jim Gallucci, “Moonshine” by Richard Whitehill, “Ordinary Person” by Charlie Brouwer, “Orpheus” by Alexander Paris, and “Spiraling Away” by Hana Jubran.

The pieces were chosen from among 40 entries by 20 artists. Once installed, the pieces will be on display for 18 months. The 2018 edition of the Danville Art Trail is partially funded by proceeds from Danville Riverview Rotary’s Ducks on the Dan event. This year’s race is scheduled for Sept. 22.
