Mayor Alonzo Jones, City Council members and City staff participated in National Night Out activities at 13 neighborhood sites across the city Tuesday evening.
The Police Department coordinates the event to build new community connections and strengthen existing ones. Opening ceremonies were held outside at the Westmoreland Preschool Center at the corner of Sycamore and Spruce streets.
“Neighborhoods are stronger when we know each other -- when we know our neighbors, when we know who to call when there is a problem, and when we develop a sense of community – a sense of being one together,” Jones said.
Jones noted that homicides in Danville are down 50 percent this year from the same period a year ago.
City Manager Ken Larking and Police Chief Philip Broadfoot also addressed those attending the opening festivities.

National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event in the United States, held the first Tuesday of August. The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch, and other anti-crime efforts.
