Danville Utilities will hold an electric vehicle ride and drive on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Community Market. The event, Danville Plugs In, will provide an opportunity for area residents to learn more about electric vehicles.

In addition, Danville Utilities will unveil its public charging station for electric vehicles. The station is located in the parking lot of the Community Market and will be available for use by the public at no cost.

At the Danville Plugs In event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Danville Utilities will showcase one of its Nissan Leaf vehicles. Owners of electric vehicles are encouraged to showcase their vehicles by registering at driveelectricweek.org/event.php?eventid=1493.

Danville Honda, Danville Toyota and Woodall Nissan will provide the vehicles for test drives.

Danville Utilities Director Jason Grey said Wednesday that the event will allow residents to check out a variety of electric vehicles, learn more about the technology and talk to EV owners who use their cars every day. “The vehicle test-drives are free and local EV owners will be available to share their experiences driving electric,” he said.

There will be balloons, popcorn, cotton candy and many giveaways courtesy of Nissan, American Municipal Power and Virginia International Raceway.

Danville Utilities is hosting the event as part of National Drive Electric Week, which begins Sept. 8 and runs through Sept. 16. The Sierra Club, Plug In America and the Electric Auto Association are organizing events nationwide.
