The Danville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 199 Martin Avenue this morning at 9:30 am. Crews arrived at 9:36 am and found fire coming from the front and right side second story windows of a medium sized 2-story house. All occupants were reported outside of the house. Engine 2’s crew pulled 1¾” fire hose, knocked down the fire from the window and entered the house to locate the fire. Engine 3’s crew secured a water supply for Engine 2. Ladder 1’s crew then set up a fan to ventilate the structure, secured utilities to the structure and then searched the house for occupants. Engine 3’s crew then pulled a backup line. The fire was located in an upstairs bedroom and Engine 2’s crew began extinguishing the fire.
The fire was knocked down and determined to be under control at 9:49 am. The house sustained moderate fire and smoke damage in the upstairs bedrooms and smoke and water damage on the first floor.
The Danville Fire Department responded with four engines, a ladder truck, a command unit, two-support units and one Fire Marshal. Twenty-one fire personnel were on the scene for 3 hours and 29 minutes. The Danville Life Saving Crew, Danville Police Department and Danville Electric Department assisted on scene.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Fire Marshal’s office and determined to be arson. Mikka Hodnett was charged with arson and attempted malicious wounding by the Fire Marshal’s Office. The occupants will be assisted by the American Red Cross.
