[ARCHIVED] Mount Cross Road widening set to begin

Road work sign

The Public Works Department has issued a notice for the contractor to proceed with the Mount Cross Road improvement project, which would widen the roadway from Lowe’s Drive to Dimon Drive to five lanes with a center turn lane.

Weather permitting, the contractor, Virginia Carolina Paving, is expected to begin mobilizing next week by bringing equipment to the work site, setting up traffic control and installing erosion and sediment controls.

The first construction will be installation of storm drains. As the project advances, the new lanes will be graded and paved.

Message boards are in place giving notification of the project.

Expansion is necessary because of increasing traffic volume in that area. The project, which covers about three-tenths of a mile, is scheduled to take a year to complete.

Intermittent lane shifts and lane closures will be required throughout the project. Motorists are urged to slow down when approaching this area and be alert to altered traffic patterns
