Danville Police officers walked door-to-door Thursday evening in the Seminole Trail neighborhood. More than 30 members of the department — along with members of the Sheriff's Office — went door to door talking with neighbors.

They talked with residents about their needs and how the Police Department can make their neighborhood a safer and better place.

“We always get such great information (on these walks) – not only information on crime, but what are their other needs,” Police Chief Scott Booth said. “Do they need more street lighting in their neighborhood? Do they hear loud music, and need the police to jump on those problems?”

Booth said citizens share information that “otherwise might escape us if we just waited for people to call.”

“When we are walking and talking we hear things that we can follow up on, so it (these walks) are always good,” Booth said.

The walk began at 4 p.m., with staff deploying from the Swain Acres Park located at 515 Springfield Road.

The community engagement walks serve as a platform to build public trust and develop positive relationships between officers and community members. Yesterday’s walk was the 10th this year in a series planned in neighborhoods across the city. The first walk was held in February in the Cardinal Village neighborhood. Since then, walks have been held in the neighborhood surrounding G.L.H. Johnson Elementary School, the Old West End, the Woodrow Wilson school area, the Almagro neighborhood located in the Betts Street and Mabin Street areas, the neighborhood surrounding Woodside Village Apartments, Cedarbrook, Henry Street, and the White Rock neighborhood.
