The Virginia Department of Transportation today closed the northbound section of the Danville Expressway/U.S. 29 Bypass over Barkers Branch near the Danville Welcome Center. The closure is due to a pipe failure.
Through traffic is being detoured at the state line onto U.S. 29 Business to U.S. 58 Business and back to the bypass. U.S. 29 Business includes West Main Street, Memorial Drive and Central Boulevard. U.S. 58 Business is Riverside Drive, River Street and South Boston Road.
Signs and other traffic control devices will alert motorists to the change in traffic pattern. Local traffic may use the northbound lanes of the Danville Expressway/U.S. 29 Bypass up to Goodyear Boulevard.
The traffic pattern over Barkers Branch changed on Dec. 6 due to a pipe failure. Since then, the pipe has further deteriorated, making a full closure necessary.
It is anticipated that this detour will be in place for approximately two weeks, weather permitting, while crossovers are constructed. Once the crossovers are complete, one lane of traffic in each direction will use Route 29 southbound for the approximately two months, weather permitting, for project completion.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, follow the signage and anticipate delays.
