[ARCHIVED] Police chief announces promotion of 10 officers

Police Chief Scott Booth today promoted 10 officers to the ranks of captain, lieutenant, sergeant and corporal, saying that as new leaders they will take the Police Department to “where we haven’t been before as an organization and as a city.”

The promotions came during a ceremony held in the City Council chambers of the Municipal Building.

“This will make 37 officers elevated in my time here,” Police Chief Scott Booth said Thursday, noting that he joined the city as police chief nearly one year ago. “I am very proud of the folks that we are promoting today.

“Before I promote anybody – corporal, major or captain, lieutenant or sergeant – I spend about 15 or 20 minutes with them. I let them know why they are here, what their mission is, and what my expectations are of them. In the 37 times that I have done this since I have been here, I have never been let down. I feel good about every woman and man promoted to lead this department. We are promoting new leaders – people who are going to take us to where we haven’t been before as an organization and as a city.”

Booth talked about leadership using a quote from author and motivational speaker John C. Maxwell that reads: “Everything rises and falls on leadership.”

“I don’t think there is any truer statement than that when it comes to a law enforcement organization,” Booth said. “Everything rises and falls on leadership in how we effectively engage the communities that we serve, how we partner with stakeholders in the community, and how we reduce crime and keep our neighborhoods safe. All are the result of the decisions that we make and our level of accountability to our community.”

Booth told each of the officers promoted that he wanted them to be a leader, to make decisions, to hold themselves accountable and to hold him accountable as police chief.

Mayor Alonzo Jones congratulated the officers receiving promotions.

“The most amazing thing about Chief Scott Booth is that he is recognizing the endeavors of some wonderful people,” Jones said. “Congratulations to each of you. We cannot thank you enough for all that you do. Your work means so much, and you don’t receive the credit that you deserve.”

The officers promoted were:

  • H.S. Richardson

  • J.W. McLaughlin
  • E.D. Moss
  • S.R. Yeaman

  • C.J. Snead
  • V.M. Jennings
  • R.B. McCormick

  • S.S. Brooks,
  • D.C. Ferguson
  • S.G. Wiles-Lipscomb

Also at Thursday's ceremony, Maj. T.W. Jones was recognized. He had been promoted to major in September but not yet ceremonially recognized.

The ceremony was the second held in the last five weeks. On Dec. 27, 26 officers were promoted to the ranks of captain, lieutenant, sergeant and corporal in a ceremony held in the auditorium of O. Trent Bonner Middle School.

The promotions are due to the retirement of senior-level members of the Police Department.
