City Council will meet Tuesday, March 5, in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.
The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.
The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.
During the business session, City Council is scheduled to vote on whether to approve a special use permit for the Danville Housing and Redevelopment Authority to construct and operate a community building at 524 Chatham Ave. The facility would include a commercial kitchen, computer lab and exercise room.
The Planning Commission earlier this month voted to recommend that City Council approve the special use permit subject to conditions. One condition is that scheduled events be limited to between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
A public hearing will be held prior to the City Council’s vote.
In addition to this vote, the City Council will hold a first reading on two matters:
- A grant of $56,347 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to be used for equipment upgrades for the Danville Regional Hazardous Materials Team.
- Funding for this year’s recreation enrichment program and for the expanded summer program operated by the Parks and Recreation Department. The Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services Board will provide $55,220. The Parks and Recreation Department will provide in-kind funds of $137,624 as a match.
A first reading is an introductory step required by City code before certain matters can be voted upon by City Council. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. Council cannot vote on the ordinance Tuesday. The earliest vote that can take place will be the March 19 City Council meeting.
During the work session, the City Council will discuss the following matters:
- Regulations on bed and breakfast establishments.
- Designation of the Danville Neighborhood Development Corp. as the city’s official land ban entity.
- Revised purchase power agreements with Turning Point Energy.
