Danville Utilities has received the E.F. Scattergood System Achievement Award from the American Public Power Association (APPA). This award honors public power systems with outstanding accomplishments.

In winning the award, the APPA cited projects by Danville Utilities that provide reliable energy and diversify its power supply portfolio. Last year, Danville Utilities celebrated the completion of the six-megawatt Kentuck solar project, and it has agreements in place for the purchase of up to 22 megawatts of solar power from projects planned in the Whitmell and Ringgold communities.

In addition to the use of solar power, Danville Utilities operates the Pinnacles hydroelectric complex in Patrick County, which generates up to 10 megawatts of power, and it receives more than four megawatts of power, depending on water flow, from the Schoolfield hydroelectric plant on Memorial Drive.

Also, Danville Utilities is a participant in American Municipal Power’s hydro projects, the largest deployment of run-of-the-river hydro in the country.

The award was presented last week at the APPA's national conference in Austin, Texas. The APPA is the service organization for the more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities that serve more than 49 million Americans.

Danville Utilities provides natural gas, water, wastewater, and telecommunications services in Danville and distributes electricity to approximately 42,000 customer locations in a 500-square-mile service territory covering Danville, the southern third of Pittsylvania County, and small portions of Henry and Halifax counties.
