[ARCHIVED] City posts agendas for next City Council meeting

City Council will meet Tuesday, July 2, in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.

The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

During the business session, the City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution authorizing an application to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation for federal and state money for mass transit operations and capital needs.

The City of Danville makes application annually. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has identified a total of $1.2 million in federal operating assistance and $487,325 in state operating aid. In addition, the state has approved $25,000 through the state's Senior Transportation Assistance Program for Danville's coordinated senior transportation service with the Southern Area Agency on Aging.  T

The state has also approved matching funds for capital projects that will provide financing to purchase five replacement buses and to complete additional improvements to the propane refueling station located at 522 Spring St.

Several other matters are on the agenda for the business session. Votes are scheduled on:

  • A request by World Media Enterprises to rezone two vacant properties on Franklin Street to allow the development of a parking lot to serve nearby downtown properties.
  • A request by Habitat for Humanity to rezone five acres of land donated by St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. The rezoning would allow Habitat for Humanity to consolidate the parcels before developing housing.
  • A request for a zoning code amendment and special use permit to allow for short-term rental of an entire home within residential districts. Barry Davis is seeking the amendment and the permit to allow for short-term rental at 500 Plum St.
  • A resolution amending the rules of procedure to promote civility and more substantive public discourse at City Council meetings.

During the work session, the City Council will receive program updates. In addition, City Council will hold a closed meeting as allowed by state law to discuss a prospective business or industry related to economic development and to discuss the acquisition of real property or disposition of publicly held real property.
