[ARCHIVED] Fire Dept. program to prep seniors for disasters

The Danville Fire Department will present a program on Thursday, July 11, to assist seniors in preparing for a disaster such as a summer storm, tornado, and hurricane.

Also, staff will assist in signing up for the city’s new emergency alert system.

The program will be presented at 11 a.m. at the Ballou Recreation Center, 760 West Main St. Reservations are not required, but seniors are encouraged to reserve a seat by calling the center at 434-799-5216.

“Older adults are especially vulnerable when disaster strikes,” Fire Chief David Eagle said Monday. “We want to share with them the steps they need to take to prepare – especially the importance of being weather aware and building a personal support network that includes family and friends.”

As part of the presentation, the Danville Life Saving Crew will share information about how it responds during a disaster, and Danville Utilities will explain how to report a power outage and prepare for extended outages that can occur during a disaster.

The disaster preparedness presentation is part of an ongoing series of programs sponsored by the Danville-Pittsylvania County Triad chapter. The chapter seeks to reduce the fear of crime and victimization among seniors by connecting them with law enforcement agencies and community organizations with resources for older adults. Programs cover a range of topics from credit card fraud to violent crimes. The local chapter is a collaboration between the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, Danville Parks and Recreation, Danville Police Department, Danville Sheriff’s Office, and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
