The victim, 72-year-old Melvin Smith, died yesterday at Duke University Hospital. He was never released from medical care after being admitted following the initial assault. This case is now being investigated as a homicide. The suspect, Lindsey Antonio ‘Tony’ Wilson, remains at large. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the Danville Police Department.
Update 07-05-2019:
Investigators have obtained a warrant for malicious wounding on Lindsey A. Wilson (39) of Yanceyville, NC. Anyone with info on his whereabouts should contact DPD. The victim remains in serious condition.
Original Release 07-04-2019:
Danville Police were called to SOVAH Health emergency room on July 4, 2019, at 12:30 AM, due to an injured man being dropped off there. Officers learned that the victim was suffering from blunt force trauma and lacerations to his head and neck. The victim is a 72-year-old male with a Martinsville address. He was later transported to Duke where he was listed in serious condition at the time of this release. The individuals who dropped off the victim left the hospital before police arrived. Investigators worked the case through the night. Police located the vehicle used to drop the victim off in the 800 blk. of Betts St. and executed a search warrant the same address. The evidence indicated this is where the crime likely took place. There is no suspect information to release at this time. This investigation is active and ongoing.
