The next meeting of City Council will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, instead of the first Tuesday of the month as normal. The change in dates is to allow City Council to attend National Night Out activities on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
City Council will meet in a business session at 7 p.m., followed by a work session. Both sessions are open to the public.
The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.
The work session will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.
River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.
During the business session, the City Council is scheduled to public hearings on a request by Mid-Atlantic Properties to redevelop two medical office buildings into a hotel at 990 Main St. and 108 Holbrook St.
As proposed, the hotel will contain up to 40 suites. The applicant is requesting a change in the zoning ordinance and a special use permit to allow the project to move forward.
Several other matters are on the agenda for the business session. Votes are scheduled on:
- A request for a special use permit at 401 Bridge St. to allow residential uses in a structure with non-residential use on the first floor. Also requested is a waiver of density requirements. The applicant, Bridge Street Lofts LLC, is proposing to develop 52 residential units with first-floor commercial space. A public hearing will precede the vote.
- Appointments and reappointments to several boards and commissions, including the River District Design Commission and the Community Improvement Council.
- An ordinance to appropriate parking fines collected by the City from July 1 to July 31 to the Danville Public Schools Education Foundation for the purpose of purchasing school supplies for Danville Public Schools students.
Also, a first reading will be held on two grants, one of which will be a three-year grant for an opioid prevention program. The Parks and Recreation Department was selected as one of five departments in the nation to develop and implement a youth Mentor program focused on ages 9-12.
A first reading is an introductory step required by City code. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. The earliest vote that can take place will be the Aug. 20 City Council meeting.
During the work session, the City Council will discuss a turn-back agreement with Transco, an agreement for energy storage coupled to a solar farm, and a proposal to require new City of Danville employees to contribute a portion of their salary to the Employees’ Retirement System each pay period.
In addition, City Council will hold a closed meeting as allowed by state law to discuss a prospective business or industry related to economic development and to discuss the acquisition of real property or disposition of publicly held real property.
