The City of Danville’s Information Technology Department has added to its collection of online story maps, with the latest one showing many of Danville’s iconic spots “the way they were.”
Called “Danville Places in Time,” this story map is a collection of photos and maps centered on both the downtown area and the North Danville area. It covers the period from the 1950s through the 1990s.
“This project came about after seeing the old 1954 insurance maps Sanborn Mapping created for the City’s Planning Department,” said Scott Longerbeam, GIS coordinator for the Information Technology Department. “We wanted to find a way to utilize that piece of the past.”
These maps were digitized and then georeferenced over the current map of Danville to show how the City was laid out, as well as a glimpse into what businesses occupied the downtown and North Main areas at that point in time. Georeferencing is the process of taking a digital image and adding geographic information to the image so that mapping software can 'place' the image in its appropriate real-world location.
The online story map consists of 48 photos and maps of downtown and 45 photos and maps of North Danville.
