[ARCHIVED] City Council will meet in business, work sessions

City Council will meet Thursday, Nov. 7, in a business session and two work sessions.

City Council, which regularly meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, is meeting on Thursday to avoid conflicting with Election Day.

Council's meeting will begin with a special work session at 5:30 p.m. This session will be closed to the public as allowed by state law for discussion or consideration of the acquisition of real property or of the disposition of publicly held real property.

The regular business session will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a second work session. Both sessions will be open to the public.

The business session will be held in the Council Chambers on the fourth floor of the Municipal Building, which is located at 427 Patton St.

The work sessions will be held on the same floor, but across the hall in the Council Conference Room. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

During the business session, City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution approving an agreement leasing airport facilities at the Danville Regional Airport to General Aviation and Averett University to provide fixed-based operator services.

City Council also is scheduled to vote on several other matters Thursday night:

  • A special use permit for commercial indoor recreation at 110 Riverpointe Drive. Queen of Virginia Skill & Entertainment is proposing to have indoor gaming. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A resolution approving an agreement leasing 52 spaces at Newton’s Landing in the River District. Bridge Street Lofts LLC requested the lease to accommodate the residential tenants at 401 Bridge St. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • Two resolutions authorizing the city manager to submit enterprise zone applications to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. A public hearing will precede the vote.
  • A resolution authorizing a site partnership license with the Westmoreland Neighborhood Association for community activities. A public hearing will precede the vote.

In addition to these votes, City Council will hold a first reading on three grants from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. A first reading is an introductory step required by City code before certain matters can be voted upon by City Council. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. Council cannot vote on the grants Thursday. The earliest votes that can take place will be the Nov. 19 City Council meeting.

During the second work session, the City Council will hear a presentation on the capital needs of the Danville public schools. Also, the City Council is scheduled to discuss the transfer of ownership of the newly proposed Riverfront Park from the Industrial Development Authority.

River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air the business session. Watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.

River City TV does not air work sessions.
