South Union Street is closed to traffic and will remain closed indefinitely so that work can be performed in connection with the Honey Bee hospitality project.
The sidewalk on the western side (Carter Craig Law office side) will remain open to allow access to businesses.
The Honey Bee project is a boutique-style hotel that will occupy buildings at 115-117 South Union St. and 123 South Union St. The hotel will horseshoe around a pocket park that will occupy the open space left from the demolition of the former Knights of Pythias Building at 119-121 South Union St. The Pythias Building was deemed unsafe due to a collapsed culvert and damage from fires inside the structure.
The closure of South Union Street will allow construction crews to fill in a basement section of the former Register & Bee building at 123 South Union St. The basement section extended underneath the street.
Also, the project will require underground electrical work and installation of a water tap, which will require the street to be closed to traffic.
Streetscape improvements slated this spring for the street will require the closure of the street for additional time.
