City Council voted Tuesday night to accept a federal grant to be used to pay for the salary and benefits for the youth services and gang violence prevention coordinator, who operates the Project Imagine program.

The grant also will be used to pay other expenses related to Project Imagine, which is a work readiness program that gives gang-affiliated youth a future off the streets by providing them with a paid work experience and mentoring while on the job.

The grant is from the Department of Criminal Justice Services and covers expenditures through June 30, 2021. The funding includes $123,908 of federal funds and $25,208 of local funds for a total of $149,116.

In other matters, City Council voted to:

  • Grant a special use permit to allow a communication tower on a lot at 995 Piney Forest Road.
  • Rezone property along Seeland Road and an unopened street labeled as future Haraway Lane to allow for the construction of multi-family dwellings. The project consists of 10 lots that will be consolidated into a parcel of approximately 2.9 acres. The Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority requested the rezoning.
  • Rezone 151 Grant St. and three lots on Garfield Street to allow for the construction of multi-family dwellings. Bibleway Church requested the rezoning. The project consists of four lots that make up approximately 1.78 acres.

In addition to these votes, City Council held first readings on two federal grants for operations at W.W. Moore Jr. Detention Home. A first reading is an introductory step required by City code before certain matters can be voted upon by City Council. This step serves to provide public notice of pending action. City Council will vote on the matter at its next business meeting.

Following the close of the business session, City Council met in a work session. In work sessions, Council reviews non-routine matters that will be voted upon in future business meetings.

During the work session, the City Council discussed appointments to boards and commissions.

Also, the City Council held a closed meeting as allowed by state law to discuss a prospective business or industry related to economic development and to discuss the acquisition of real property or disposition of publicly held real property.
