[ARCHIVED] City limits public access to city office buildings

City Manager Ken Larking today announced that beginning on Tuesday, the Municipal Building and all other City offices would be open to the public by appointment only.

The action is being taken to help prevent exposure to and the transmission of the new coronavirus.

“In an effort to protect our workforce and encourage social distancing throughout our community, I’ve decided to take this step,” Larking said. “We have several options available for people to conduct business with the City. Those options include by phone, e-mail, mobile application, and through our website. If none of these is an option, staff will take visitors in person by appointment.”

Office contact information is available at www.danvilleva.gov.

Non-emergency issues can be reported on the “Danville VA” mobile application that works in partnership with SeeClickFix. The app is available on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Citizens will be able to provide City staff with pictures, videos, specific descriptions, and locations of issues through the app.

Citizens also can report a problem from their tablet or computer by going to the City’s website and clicking on “Fix It Danville.”

All City services continue to operate.

To date, the City has implemented the following actions:

  • Issued a state of local emergency.
  • Temporarily suspended the disconnection of utility services for nonpayment.
  • Suspended the $50 delinquent account fee for all utility customer classes until further notice. The delinquent account fee is the fee charged for nonpayment 35 days after the due date.
  • Deferred the payment by restaurants of their February meals tax collection, ordinarily due on March 31, for one month with no penalty.
  • Deferred the payment by hotels of their February occupancy and room night taxes, ordinarily due on March 31, for one month with no penalty.
  • Suspended all business travel for City of Danville employees unless approved by the City Manager’s Office.
  • Implemented social-distancing for City employee workplace protocols, which limit the number of face-to-face meetings.
  • Taken steps to protect first responders and front line employees from exposure, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Stepped up cleaning and disinfecting protocols in public buildings.
