City Council will meet Thursday, May 7, in a regular business session, followed by a work session. Both sessions will be held using Zoom, a virtual meeting application that will allow Council members to “attend” the meeting from their home or office.
City Council regularly meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month, but this week’s meeting was moved to Thursday because elections for the City Council and the Danville School Board originally were scheduled for Tuesday, May 5. Governor Ralph Northam has moved the local elections to May 19 due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
This week’s meeting will begin at 7 p.m. River City TV, the city’s government access channel, will air both the business and work sessions. Citizens can watch it live on cable (Comcast channel 10 and Gamewood channel 122) or streaming on the River City TV Facebook page.
The following items are slated for a public hearing on Thursday, May 7:
- Consideration of denying a special use permit at 401 South Ridge Street for commercial recreation (Indoor)
- Consideration of denying a special use permit at 2980 West Main Street for commercial recreation (Indoor)
- Consideration of granting a special use permit at 1041 Piney Forest Road.
- The fiscal year 2020 proposed budget for the Danville School Board. The proposed budget may be examined on the Danville Public School’s website.

Under the City Council’s rules of procedure, comments are limited to 750 words, which is the equivalent of five minutes speaking, for communications from visitors, and 400 words, which is the equivalent of three minutes speaking, for public hearings.

Citizens can submit comments up until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6.
The city is under a local state of emergency due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Last month, the City Council ratified the emergency declaration and adopted a resolution that allows for temporary changes to how public meetings are conducted to continue operations.
The changes enable meetings to proceed virtually during this local state of emergency.
